Steptoe Butte State Park
The Palouse area is well known for the rolling hills and wheat fields, making it an ideal photography location. Steptoe Butte rises 3,600 feet above the land, offering breathtaking 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape. Steptoe Butte is a day park so there is no campgrounds but there are picnic tables so we recommend bringing a sack lunch or dinner and watching the beautiful sunset from above the countryside. This is also one of our cheap date ideas if you're in the Spokane area.
The Codger Pole
This is such a unique piece of roadside Americana that it’s worth a stop. Small towns are known for their loyalty and love for their high school football teams and Colfax is no exception. The Codger is a tribute to the 1938 game between Colfax Bulldogs and St. John Eagles. It was such a memorable, contested game that all the original players returned fifty years later for a rematch. The poles, which features all 51 players on 5, massive cedar tree poles, was intricately designed and carved by John LaBenne.

The historic Perkins House
For those interested in a bygone era or into architecture, a trip to the Perkins House will transport you to the Victorian area. James Perkins, a prominent business owner, built the house for his family in 1887. Time unfortunately took its toll out on the house but it has been beautifully renovated by the Whitman County Historical Society and the house is back to its original glory. Our favorite room of the house is the music room with the gorgeous emerald green wallpaper. Also on the grounds is the original cabin the family lived in while the house was being built. Tours are still given on the weekends and the house is also available to rent for various occasions. The house is closed for tours during the months of January and February so plan in advance.
