How To Plan An Amazing Weekend Getaway: Tips For Your Next Trip

how to plan an amazing getaway

We all know weekends are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. While you work to maintain your routine during the week, at the end of Friday, it’s time to let loose and have some fun. But before you go on a weekend adventure, you need to plan for it. I’ve put together this list of travel tips to help you get ready for your weekend getaway.

Plan with Purpose

Whether you’re flying to a new place or just want to explore a different city, it can be overwhelming to have to book flights, hotels, and other things before you go on vacation. The first step is to make your plans without breaking the bank. Create a trip budget and decide how you want to stretch that budget. If you’re going to a new place, travel in the off season. Book your hotel well in advance. This way you can stay on the cheap, and you can easily see and explore a new place. Use an app like Trip It!, which has become a huge help for many in  planning a great getaway.

Understand Your Budget

The first step to planning an amazing weekend is understanding your budget. I’m sure you already have a good idea of what you can afford to spend on travel, but this is where planning and careful consideration of your budget comes in. Start by making a list of things you need to do. Be honest with yourself about how much you can reasonably afford to spend each weekend and find a balance between your needs and wants. Even if you have a big family and multiple children, having a huge trip budget could limit your experiences. Not everyone has the ability to travel full-time so having a defined budget may be helpful in keeping you grounded. One way to determine how much you can spend on travel is to subtract your anticipated income from your expected bills.

Know Your Destination

The first thing you should do is learn about the area you are visiting. If you’re in Central Florida, do you know the top tourist attractions? What about the beaches? This way, you can maximize your time, and you will be able to avoid some of the crowds and high prices of the major attractions. As someone who travels a lot, I have developed my own system for getting around. I will take public transportation (metro, buses, ferries, etc.) to wherever I need to go. If it’s a longer trip (like Nashville to New York City), I will take Uber or Lyft. Both services are inexpensive and have unlimited destinations. If you don’t mind flying, the cheapest flights I’ve found for an early-morning flight are about $250 round trip.

Check the Weather

There is nothing worse than taking a suitcase full of shorts, tank tops, and flip flops only to arrive as a freak storm hits. It seems silly to make this a tip but believe me, not being prepared for the weather can happen to even the most seasoned traveler. We like to dress in layers which is easily remedied if we get too hot or cold. Also, make sure you pack for the situations you’re going to be in. Yes, those strappy shoes look fabulous but they’re not going to be the greatest for walking or sight-seeing. Wear something loose and comfortable to avoid a traveler's bloat.

Pack Appropriately

It’s no secret that the average American backpack weighs close to 25 pounds. This can be hard on your back if you are heading somewhere for a few days and don’t know what to expect. Also, airlines charge high fees for baggage that’s over a certain weight limit.  Check out packing tips online where you can find really creative and innovative ways to pack light. Make sure you only pack what you will need. I know we’re all tempted to bring a couple pairs of shoes at least but really think about what you truly need and what you’ll really wear. Make sure your luggage stands out, especially if it seems like every person has the same exact bag as you. Colorful tape, bows, and luggage tags are a must.

Conclusion

Planning in advance can help overcome a lot of travel nightmares. Creating healthy habits and following a regular travel planning routine will help you have more fun during your time away. And remember, it’s all about balance — staying healthy and active while you have fun. Enjoy yourself!
